A Year and a Half of Art

BY: MARLA O'BRIEN

Todos Santos is famous for art. The small town boasts more professional artists and galleries than most cities several times its size.

Now thanks to the efforts of volunteers in support of the Palapa Society, everyone can enjoy a year and a half of vibrant creations inside the first-ever 2020-21 Artists of Todos Santos bilingual calendar.

Each month features a glossy artwork reproduction along with information about the contributing artist in both English and Spanish.

The calendar was the brainchild of Jamie Sechrist, marketing director with the Palapa Society, and Janice Kinne of the Journal del Pacifico.

“I had been wanting to do one for a few years in order to help raise more funding for The Palapa Society,” explains Sechrist.

As one of the key organizers of the annual Todos Santos Open Studio Tour, Sechrist is no stranger to the local art community. So when the call went out for contributions to the calendar, the response was overwhelming.

Forty-eight artists put forward over 120 pieces of work to be selected from. A jury of 13 adjudicated the final rounds to choose 18 works for each month from January 2020 to June 2021.

Michael Cope, who opened the Galeria de Todos Santos in 1994, contributed a cloudscape painting titled “La Poza.” It won the jury’s vote for first place and graces the cover.

Other works in the calendar are varied, from up-and-coming painter Jimena Garcia to beloved art teacher Tori Sepulveda, and renowned wood sculptor Benito Ortega to nature photographer Kaia Thomson.

What each of the artists has in common is a passion for supporting the educational work of the Palapa Society, which runs a 21st Century middle and high school for local students as well as programs for children and adults.

Production of the calendar was sponsored by Bryan Jauergui of the Todos Santos Eco Adventures, so all funds from the 500 peso sale goes directly to the Society.

The calendar was officially launched on November 16 at a party hosted by Todos Santos Brewing with all the participating artists in attendance as well as over 90 supporters.

Many of the same artists will be participating in the upcoming Todos Santos Open Studio Tour scheduled for February 7-9, 2020, also in support of the Palapa Society. If you buy a calendar, you won’t have to mark this popular community event as it’s already listed for the next two years.
