Homeless dogs and cats are especially problematic in some areas of the state, mostly in the barrios where “wild” dogs cause problems by picking fights with other dogs that belong to families, spreading the garbage that is placed to be picked up by the municipal services and unfortunately the most concerning, the attack on humans.
Thankfully, there are some who want to take action to help with this situation, and hopefully others will follow.
On behalf of the state government, Mayor Milena Quiroga received a Mobile Pet Care Unit, which will be used in sterilization campaigns for stray dogs and cats. The presentation took place during the flag-raising ceremony on the esplanade of City Hall, in the presence of local authorities and representatives of the donor company.
The unit was donated by the “Península de los Sueños” Mercantile Society and will be operated by the CEMAC (Municipal Canine Care Center). This will provide free veterinary services to communities with a high incidence of stray animals.
The main goal of this unit is to reduce the overpopulation of stray animals. This mobile unit will begin its journey in the districts of El Pescadero, Todos Santos, and Los Dolores, communities that have several reports of stray dogs or victims of abuse. The purpose of this collaboration is to reduce the uncontrolled birth rate of animals and prevent the public health problems and animal abuse that this entails, bringing direct and free care to the areas where it is most needed. The sterilization sessions will be carried out free of charge and directly in the areas most in need.
The mayor concluded by explaining that this delivery exemplifies the collaboration between government, the business sector, and organized civil society, promoting actions that benefit not only animals but also the public health of the population.
