La Paz Unveils a World of Sacred Masks

La Paz’s anthropology museum invites the community and visitors to experience “Umbrales Sagrados. Máscaras: mitos, magia y tradición, a powerful new exhibition opened on March 27,  for three months.

This evocative exhibition explores the enduring symbolism of masks as portals between Worlds, bridging myth, spirituality, and ancestral knowledge. Through a carefully curated collection, visitors are guided into a space where tradition and imagination converge, inviting both wonder and reflection.

La Paz’s native, Levi Cota is one of artists featured in this exhibition. Born in 1995 and trained in history at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, Cota has dedicated his work to preserving and sharing cultural knowledge with visitors from around the world.

He describes his connection to art as deeply personal, “a form of expiation, a way of releasing the demons of my mind.” His perspective adds a quiet, introspective layer to the exhibition’s themes in bold colors. Reminding us that art is not only something to be seen, but also something to be felt and lived.

“Working at the museum gives me all the fulfillment I need,” he shares. “It allows me to explore more personal themes in my art without the pressure of making it public.”

As both a museum custodian and an educator, Romero Cota plays a vital role in guiding students, tourists, and the local community.
