CRIT centers are pediatric facilities that provide rehabilitation services to children with neurological and musculoskeletal disabilities and their families. They are funded and built through the Teleton Foundation, which is the largest private child rehabilitation system in the world. CRIT stands for Centro de Rehabilitación Infantil Teleton, and it translates to Children’s Rehabilitation Institute Teleton.
There is at least one center in every state of Mexico, but now, thanks to generous and caring hearts, the dream of building a second CRIT in Baja California Sur is now a reality.
The first CRIT in La Paz opened its doors in November 2010.
The Teleton is an annual event started in 1997 and is broadcast live nationally to collect funds to help create CRIT centers in cities across Mexico.
CRIT Baja California was the seventeenth facility built. The 22 Centers that currently operate throughout Mexico benefit more than 27,000 people a year, through rehabilitation services that seek to promote the full development and inclusion in society of the children served.
The staff and a network of over 50 volunteers at CRIT Baja California provide a safe and productive environment to help the children achieve self-sufficiency and a productive life. They have a dedicated medical staff and the latest amenities to provide the best care possible. The building is a large orange colored starfish shape with bright colors inside, making it a cheerful and happy place.
It boasts a large, modern playground outside that is wheelchair accessible, and a large cafeteria and dining area for families.
There are also doctors’ offices and several therapy rooms for different types of treatments, including a heated swimming pool for water therapy.
Parents and therapists work with the kids in the pool, and there are hot tubs for just the therapist and the child.
There is wheelchair training and a practice area where kids get used to using their wheelchairs over rocks, sand, and even a flight of stairs.
CRIT Baja California has helped thousands of children with disabilities, which before 2011, was not available in La Paz.
There is no other option like CRIT available to families in the State. Many need to travel over 12 hours for appointments and therapies.
Representatives from the Chileno Bay Foundation, the El Dorado Foundation, and the Los Cabos Children Foundation team visited to see the progress made in the construction of this space, which will make it easier for more families in Los Cabos to care for their children in this same community.
The new Center will have the capacity to serve 350 families and will serve as an extension of CRIT Baja California Sur, with the goal of offering rehabilitation services and specialized care to 500 people with disabilities each year.
The inauguration of this rehabilitation center is scheduled for December of this year, while its opening is estimated to take place in early January 2026.
