Surf News Update

Our local surfing talent is now the youngest Mexican surfer to qualify for the WSL Challenger Series, getting one step closer to fulfilling his dream.

If Cassity finishes in the top ten at the end of the season, he will qualify to compete with the best of the best in the World Surf League World Championship Tour. The Challenger Series is just below the WCT. If Lucas qualifies, he will be the second Mexican surfer in the history of Pro Surfing to compete in the WCT with comrade Alan Cleland from Pascuales, Colima, who is the first pro surfer to represent Mexico in the WCT 2025 season.

We caught up with the 17-year-old phenom in a mid-season Q&A

GG: Lucas, how does it feel to qualify and represent Mexico on the Challenger Series?

LC: It felt great to qualify for the Challenges Series. It was very difficult, but I am super happy for the opportunity, and I’m super happy to be representing  Mexico because that is where I am from, and I am proud of that.

GG: What are your future plans?

LC: I plan to finish high school, I have a year and a half left, and eventually try to qualify for the world championship tour and try to win a world title, those are my plans.

GG: Where are you going to travel this year to compete?

LC: I’m going to travel to Australia, South Africa. I’m gonna go to Huntington Beach, California, Portugal and then Brazil, so it’s going to be a lot of traveling, a lot of new places for me, and I am super excited.

GG: Where can people following you watch you compete on TV?

LC: Most of the Challenger Series events are streamed on YouTube and on the World Surf League (WSL) APP or Website, that’s where you can follow the contests, and my heats will be broadcast there.

GG: Are you going to be one of the youngest competing in the WCT?

LC: “I believe I am one of the younger people competing on the Challenger Series. It is a little intimidating, but at the same time, I am getting a lot of experience at a very young age, so I am very grateful for that, and yeah, I’m ready to step up my game and see what I can do.”

GG: Congratulations, Lucas! We’ll make sure to keep your hometown updated!

Editor’s Note: Keep an eye on this kid—Lucas Cassity is not just chasing waves, he’s chasing history. We’ll be following his journey and cheering from the Baja shoreline. Go get ’em, Lucas!
