Citizens of La Paz Reported a Roadblock on the Los Barriles Road

Authorities responded immediately

A few days ago, residents of Los Barriles found that a section of the coastal road that connects this community to the El Cardonal was closed, blocking the free access of vehicles.

On social media, people shared images showing heavy machinery removing earth, rocks, and protected vegetation and blocking the original road with a type of fence leading residents to question the environmental impact of the construction work being carried out by a private individual in a federal maritime-terrestrial zone.

Faced with this situation, La Paz Mayor Milena Quiroga acted, stating that the work was carried out by a private individual and that the project lacked any permit or application, the work was halted, and the corresponding fines were imposed. “Well, we’re going to be vigilant to ensure this doesn’t happen again, and we thank the public for filing the complaint; that’s the best way we can support each other” she stated.

The Mayor of La Paz said that work is often done in very remote communities or on difficult access roads, where not many people travel, but with these citizen reports, interventions can be made. She also mentioned that this year alone, two or three similar cases have occurred. “It is absolutely essential that the laws and regulations be followed and that whatever is done be done consistently,” she stated.
