They deserve to be heard
As in any other place in the world, firefighters here are known for their courage and willingness to enter dangerous situations, often putting their own lives at risk to save others and property. Their work is crucial for community safety, responding to emergencies like fires, medical incidents, and hazardous material spills.
Especially during hurricanes, their goal is to help people in need without any ulterior motives. But unfortunately, they are not being appreciated as they should. At least this is how they feel.
The fire department personnel of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are advocating for better working conditions and pay from the Los Cabos City Council. They emphasize that despite past promises to ensure their salaries would at least match those of police officers, this commitment has not been honored. Currently, firefighters earn significantly less than other public servants.
Commander Antonio Carbajal pointed out that the salaries for firefighters do not reflect the high cost of living in cities in Los Cabos compared to other regions where similar roles offer fairer compensation. He highlighted that the rapid population growth in Los Cabos has resulted in an increased demand for emergency services, including responses to medical emergencies and accidents.
With firefighters working around the clock to serve the community, there’s a strong argument for them to receive appropriate recognition through better pay. Some of their demands are the creation of new pay scales based on factors such as years of service, job position, and qualifications. Both fire departments and city officials will collaborate to address these concerns swiftly.
