What a nightmare!
The San Jose roundabout has long been a bottleneck, with several roads converging to and from the city, including the toll road to the airport. This congestion has led to persistent traffic jams, affecting travelers from both Cabo and San Jose. After years of frustration, authorities are finally taking action.
A major infrastructure project aims to alleviate these issues through the construction of an overpass and the implementation of an autonomous traffic light system. These improvements are expected to enhance mobility in an area that has faced escalating road conflicts in recent years.
The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) has announced that construction will commence in the second half of 2025, requiring a provisional closure of traffic through the area for 12 months. Marco Antonio Gutiérrez, director of the SICT Center in the state, stated that the public tender for the project will be launched in the coming days. Interested companies can review the bidding requirements through “CompraNet” (e-Procurement System) at https://www.gob.mx/compranet and submit their proposals by the end of March. The contract award is expected in April, with signing and preliminary work beginning in the same month. On-site construction is scheduled to start in May or June 2025.
With an estimated cost about $20 million, the project is anticipated to take 10 to 12 months to complete. During this period, the SICT assures that mobility will not be severely disrupted, as alternative routes will be implemented to maintain circulation on all four lanes of the Transpeninsular Highway.
Beyond the overpass, the project will include pedestrian crossings and bicycle lanes as part of a comprehensive mobility plan. These enhancements aim to benefit both residents and tourists by reducing congestion and optimizing vehicle flow in one of San José del Cabo’s busiest areas.
This initiative marks a significant step forward for the region’s infrastructure, benefiting Los Cabos as a major tourist destination while also improving the quality of life for its residents.
