If Mexican congress approves it.
President Sheinbaum asked the Congress of the Union that the Senate approve the entry of a delegation of the United States Army into the national territory to train elements of the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR). The request was sent by the Ministry of the Interior to the Board of Directors of the Permanent Commission of Congress for analysis.
If approved, the training will be carried out at the Marine Corps Specialized Training Center, located in San Luis Carpizo, Campeche, between February 17 and March 28, 2025. The US delegation will be made up of 10 elements of the Seventh Special Forces Group, who will carry out joint activities with the SEMAR Special Operations Unit.
According to the document, and in compliance with article 76 of the Constitution, it is up to the Senate of the Republic to authorize the entry of foreign troops into the country. The objective of the training is to strengthen the operational capacity of the Mexican Armed Forces through the transfer of specialized knowledge and skills.
The document also details that the instructors will arrive on February 15, 2025, aboard a C-130 type military aircraft, owned by the US Army, landing at the Campeche International Airport. The departure of the delegation is scheduled for March 30, 2025. L
President Claudia Sheinbaum's proposal arises in a context of diplomatic tension following statements by the president of the United States, who classified international drug cartels as terrorist groups and announced measures to stop illegal migration to the US.
