Are Lobsters Walking Away From Us? Just a little bit. The head of the state’s fisheries agency stated that lobsters are moving North, blaming the move to warmer water temperatures caused by climatic change. Lobster catches slowed down in Punta Abreojos and La Bocana but increased in Progreso and Tortugas Bay, farther north up the Baja California Sur. The total catch did not diminish as over 1,400 metric tons made it to the market, a similar number as last year’s season.
Cabo Goes Solo to Tourism Fair. Los Cabos was the only destination present in the WTM Latin America (World Travel Market) held in Sao Paulo, Brazil April 15 to 17. Rodrigo Esponda, director of the Los Cabos Tourism Fund (FITURCA) met with representatives of Copa Airlines, Amadeus, Virtuoso, Traveler Made, Incentive and Conventions companies, among others.
New Ferry Boat Added to the Fleet. The Santa Rita ferry boat was introduced to our governor Friday in the usual ceremony. The Santa Rita, built in the United Kingdom, will increase the transportation capacity of merchandise that we receive from the mainland. Certainly, the growth in Baja California Sur’s population demanded it. The boat is owned by TMC, which stands for Transportación Maritima de California. Thank you TMC!
Small Giant Oarfish Found Beached in La Ventana, East Cape. The giant oarfish is a species of oarfish of the family Regalecidae. It is an oceanodromous species with a worldwide distribution, excluding polar regions. Other common names include Pacific oarfish, king of herrings, ribbonfish, and streamer fish. R. glesne is the world’s longest ray-finned fish. A 23-foot (7 mts) one was discovered by United States Navy SEAL trainees on the beach of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in 1996. The giant oarfish, and the related R. russelii, are sometimes known as “earthquake fish” because they are popularly believed to surface before and after an earthquake.
Los Cabos Did Well in Recent Travel Pow Wow. Known as the “Tianguis Turistico,” or Tourist Open Market, the most important tourist Pow-Wow in Latin America took place April 8 to 12. Los Cabos representatives, led by the tourism fund (FITURCA) held 1,500 meetings with tour operators and airlines from different parts of the world. General attendance to the Tianguis, held in Acapulco, was lower than in past years mostly due to a shortage of rooms after hurricane Otis hit the port hard in October last year.
Sunken Yacht in La Paz Floats Again. Nobody knew how it happened but yesterday morning a boat that was sunk in La Paz by hurricane Norma last October, was afloat again, apparently with no human intervention. There are still dozens of sunken boats whose owners have not towed them away. The state government says it’s a federal area so they won’t do it. Sigh.
