aberod.JPGAbelardo “Rod” Rodríguez passed away last month in California at the age of 100. He was the son of former Mexico President Abelardo L. Rodriguez, and a pilot trained in California. He became a flight instructor and then a pilot for the British Air Force and later in the Mexican Air Force. He flew over our gorgeous beaches and fell in love with them, so he acquired land at Los Frailes, Palmilla, Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos.

In 1950, Rodriguez built the Rancho Las Cruces hotel, the original Palmilla Hotel in 1956, and only 6 years later the Hacienda hotel on Medano beach.

He lived most of his adult years between Rancho Santa Fe, California and his Rancho Las Cruces hotel. He married a Hollywood star, Lucille Bremer in 1948 and is survived by his four children, Cristina, Karen, Abelardo and Ricardo.
