Authorities have announced brief but controlled traffic interruptions at the Fonatur roundabout in San José del Cabo as work begins on assembling structural components for the new overpass. The Baja California Sur Center of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) reported that installation will take place from December 15 to 22, requiring partial closures of up to five minutes at a time. These measures will occur only during the movement and placement of structural elements within the roundabout.
Marco Gutiérrez de la Rosa, director of the SICT Center in BCS, said the closures will be brief and closely managed to minimize traffic disruption. “We have already begun assembling the bridge structures at the roundabout; the underpass is already in place. Traffic will continue circulating with the aid of traffic lights, and closures will last only about five minutes while structures are moved into position,” he explained. He emphasized that all work would take place within the roundabout and that normal traffic flow will be maintained.

He also confirmed that the Transpeninsular Highway between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas remains open and safe for motorists. Recent maintenance has improved road conditions, and no major potholes are currently present. He added that additional maintenance and improvement projects will continue through 2026, with funding already allocated.
“In recent months, the road conditions were not ideal and there were several issues. Now the highway is passable, without major potholes, and in very good condition. We will continue working on it next year,” he said.
Despite these assurances, some motorists have continued to raise concerns about road safety and deterioration in certain sections. In response, the Los Cabos City Council has carried out temporary repairs and partial maintenance to reduce risks while awaiting comprehensive federal repaving.
Construction of the Fonatur overpass is advancing ahead of schedule. “Overall, we are about 15 percent ahead of schedule. You can already see the underpass and walls taking shape, and we have completed the earth removal. We expect to finish during the first half of next year, possibly in May,” Gutiérrez said.
The overpass is projected for completion in May 2026. Once finished, it is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion for more than 60,000 vehicles that pass through the area daily.
