The Los Cabos City Council has secured the right-of-way for a new inland highway connecting El Tezal and San José del Cabo, set to become the municipality’s third major link between Cabo San Lucas and San José.
Fifteen property owners, including the San Lucas Ejido, have agreed to donate land for the Interurban Axis, a 20-kilometer route positioned between the Transpeninsular Highway and the toll road. The highway will run from El Tezal to the San José toll booth, easing congestion on existing roads.
“This is the most impactful road and financial project for the municipality,” said Roberto Flores, Director of Urban Development. “Once preliminary plans are complete, we’ll seek federal funding to begin construction.”
Complementary projects are also in the works, including Choyero Boulevard, an extension of the new road, and Estrella Boulevard, linking Leona Vicario Street with the Punta Ballena Bridge.
Meanwhile, the Fonatur overpass project has reached 25% completion, ahead of schedule, thanks to double shifts and additional machinery, according to Marco Gutiérrez de la Rosa of the federal infrastructure agency (SICT). A temporary bypass now connects the toll road with the Transpeninsular Highway to keep traffic moving during construction.
More than 63,000 vehicles travel the Transpeninsular Highway daily, with two-thirds bound for Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo. Years of stop-and-go traffic have fueled calls for alternative routes. Mayor Christian Agúndez hailed the land agreement as “a huge step for mobility, urban development, and city planning.”
