According to the National Seismological Service, dozens of earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.7 and 4.5 have been recorded in San José del Cabo during 2025.
Since 2019, the Federal Government has been working on the development of a comprehensive mass messaging system to alert the population seconds before an earthquake. This project involves the Ministryof Security and Citizen Protection, the National Digital Strategy Coordination, and the Mexico City Government.
The state government of BCS will implement the Cell Broadcast system to notify the population of earthquakes seconds in advance directly.
Héctor Amparano, spokesman of the Civil Protection of Los Cabos, reported that they are seeking to implement this technology in the state due to the recurring seismic activity, especially in Los Cabos.
SASMEX (The Mexican Seismic Alert System) will be expanded this year to include all smartphones, which will receive earthquake notifications even without an internet connection, using technology called Cell Broadcast, which is part of a “a national effort to strengthen the response capacity to natural phenomena,” including earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater.
The state official explained that the technology allows alerts to be sent directly to cell phones without the need for data or Wi-Fi signals.
In addition, seismic stations are being installed to improve detection and monitoring. One is already underway in the Sierra de la Laguna, and another is planned for Los Cabos.
These actions are part of a broader strategy that recognizes the need to prepare not only for hurricanes, but also for earthquakes, which have occurred with greater frequency in recent years, Amparano indicated.
Civil Protection highlighted that seismic activity in the region is due to its location on a fault, which causes most of the tremors to be practically imperceptible.
Although these phenomena cannot be predicted, the agency stressed the importance of this alarm system so that citizens can stay informed and know what measures to take in case a new earthquake occurs.
