Cabo native, Captain Max Tolson, son of Juancho and Doris Tolson of Medano Beach’s Sand Bar fame is towing the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) that was decommissioned in May, 2009 after serving 48 years of nonstop deployments. It is being towed from Bremerton, WA. to its final destination, a scrapping facility in Brownsville, Tx, where it is scheduled to arrive in late May. The USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) is a pre nuclear powered vessel and the last “oil burner” that did six tours in Vietnam and was the first carrier to be awarded a Presidential Unit Citation. It passed by Cabo San Lucas on the night of January 29, 50 miles beyond Cabo’s iconic arch, unseen to many. Toulson is towing her, too large to cross the Panama canal in a 17,000 mile journey from Washington to the Strait of Magellan through the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean Sea to its ultimate resting place in the Gulf of Mexico. Let’s go down to the Sand Bar to share a few cold ones with proud parents Juancho and Doris! See you there!
