Spring Breakers in Los Cabos Generate Almost 100 Tons of Trash in Just 10 Days

Come on, guys—let’s take care of the environment!

Many spring breakers carelessly discard their trash on the beaches and surrounding areas, posing a serious environmental concern. If not collected, this waste can easily be swept into the ocean with the incoming  tide.

The Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) of Los Cabos estimates that garbage collection on the beaches will increase by 500% during the spring break festivities, which run from March 1 to April 5, as well as during the Easter 2025 vacation period. In past years, more than 95 tons of trash were collected in 2024, and approximately 90 tons in 2023.

The most common litter found on El Médano Beach includes glass bottles from alcoholic beverages, plastic water containers, and cigarette butts, often left behind by young vacationers.

Rafael Álvarez, municipal coordinator of ZOFEMAT Los Cabos, emphasized that in addition to daily beach cleaning efforts, lifeguards are stationed at seven towers to ensure public safety. Surveillance will also be conducted from the sea using jet skis, with trained personnel on standby for rescue situations.

“We are collaborating with Public Services workers and ZOFEMAT teams to clean and collect garbage at various high-traffic tourist spots, including El Médano, Las Viudas, Santa María, El Chileno, El Tule, Palmilla, and La Ribera. I urge everyone to use waste containers properly,” he stated.

Roberto Sandoval, coordinator of Public Services in Cabo San Lucas, confirmed that daily efforts will be made to remove and dispose of beach waste while ensuring that these tasks do not interfere with regular waste collection in residential areas.

Let’s all do our part to keep our environment clean!
