The company Amazon Web Services (AWS) agreed with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to invest $5 billion in Mexico for the creation of a digital region based in Querétaro, which is estimated to generate more than 7,000 jobs annually.
The announcement was made yesterday morning at the presidential conference at the National Palace by the vice president for Latin America of AWS, Paula Bellizia; and the head of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard.
In this regard, the federal president asserted that this is good news for the country. “It is a commitment to Mexico; it shows that there is confidence in our country to invest.”
He said that Plan Mexico – presented yesterday and which seeks to attract investments of 277 billion dollars – is a long-term strategy, which will transcend the six-year term, in order to achieve the equitable and sustainable development of Mexico.
The AWS board highlighted two benefits for the next 15 years of the announced investment: it will contribute more than 3 billion dollars to Mexico's GDP and will support an annual average of 7,000 highly qualified, full-time jobs.
The second is that the investments come accompanied by the commitment to continue training the next generation of Mexican digital talent.
“Since 2017, Amazon Web Services has trained more than 500,000 Mexicans in cloud skills and we plan to train up to 200,000 more by the end of next year.”
Ebrard, for his part, indicated that the investment of this international company will contribute almost 10 billion dollars to the national GDP over the next 15 years.
He highlighted that yesterday, when presenting the Mexico Plan, investments of 277 billion pesos were announced, and this AWS represents 5 billion dollars of that total. “It is the type of investment we are talking about.”
The secretary indicated that Mexican talent will be trained, trained and given opportunities throughout the AWS system worldwide.
He pointed out that 400 thousand trained people will be added in Mexico, trained to manage a region with the data center set based in Querétaro a very important city state in the mainland.
“It is good news for Mexico, it is one of the most important investments that have been recorded.”
