An Experience You Will Never Forget!
The whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea and the largest fish in the world, have made their way to La Paz. These magnificent creatures migrate to the Sea of Cortez, gathering in large numbers to feast in the plankton-rich waters of Bahía de La Paz. While whale sharks can be seen almost year-round, the highest concentration occurs from November to April. A little late this season, but they’re here now!
Whale sharks are completely harmless, with no teeth and a diet that consists of microscopic plankton. They filter water as they feed, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for onlookers and swimmers alike. The nutrient-rich waters of the bay, caused by seasonal upwellings, provide an ideal feeding ground, particularly in the shallow areas.
For the best experience, choose an authorized tour company. Swimming with whale sharks can be an ethical and regulated activity, especially in La Paz, where some of the strictest rules worldwide are enforced. Only 14 boats are allowed in the area at any given time, with a maximum stay of 3 hours per boat. Each group must find its own whale shark, and human interaction is limited to ensure the well-being of these majestic creatures.
Tour operators in La Paz must be licensed by Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). The 2024 permits have already been approved, so plan your visit now for an unforgettable adventure with these awe-inspiring marine animals. Don’t miss out!
