Our new Mayor, Professor Oscar Leggs, noted on several occasions during his campaign that the ExPat community has for too long been ignored, and that if elected, he would work toward recognizing the needs and concerns of this important part of the Los Cabos Community. It would appear he is working toward keeping that promise.
Prof Leggs has fulfilled this campaign promise by appointing a full-time foreign residents coordinator to his staff. For that position, he has selected a long-time Cabo leader, entrepreneur and resident, Nohemi Romero. Her official title is “Coordinator Attention to Foreign Residents H. XIV City Hall of Los Cabos”. She reports directly to the Mayor and is supported by the Municipal Tourism Director, Donna L Jeffries. Her office is located inside the CATAC (Centro de Atencion al Tourista) building on the Marina in front of the Los Cabos Cultural Pavilion.
Ms. Romero has a long history of working to better the Los Cabos community. She holds a master’s degree in Gestalt psychotherapy, speaks French, German and English and has been the owner of a language institute here in Cabo since 2008. In 2018, she was a candidate to Los Cabos Municipality and Municipal tourism coordinator for Cabo San Lucas from 2018-2021. She served the Rotary Club Cabo San Lucas as president for the period 2015-2016 and as a representative in Los Cabos of Rotary Global History Fellowship since 2015.
The primary objective of this new office is two-fold. The first objective will be to reach out to the ExPat Community and listen to their concerns. To achieve that, the mayor has directed Ms. Romero to form an ad hoc advisory committee made up of select community leaders within various ExPat sectors of the municipality. This committee will meet regularly to identify and then communicate to the mayor and his staff what these concerns may be.
Secondly, Ms. Romero will be available to assist foreign residents and visitors in dealing with any issues they may have in dealing with any department within the Municipal government. Those of us who have lived here for any length of time is well aware of the massive amount of misinformation that seems to permeate throughout our community. Ms. Romero has made it her personal challenge to work toward eliminating misinformation by educating and working one on one with anyone who may have issues that need to be resolved. In the short time, she has been in office, she has already assisted several ExPats in overcoming obstacles they had encountered within the municipal bureaucracy.
There is nothing like a shared interest to draw people together. To work toward learning what those shared interests may be, Prof. Leggs has directed Ms. Romero to work out the logistics for a first-time-ever event: “Encuentro entre culturas”. Loosely translated it means meeting between cultures. The purpose of the event will be for the Mayor and his administrative leaders to meet with members of the ExPat community in an informal social atmosphere and share their common concerns and ideas. This function is open to the ExPat community by reservation and will be held on Wednesday, December 8, at 6 p.m. at “xplorajardin,” the site of the Tuesday “Farmers Market” in El Tezal. Stay tuned … More information will be made available as soon as the details are finalized.
Anyone seeking assistance or clarification regarding any municipal service may contact Ms. Romero any day, Monday- Friday, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. She has provided us with her cell phone number: +52 (624) 171-2843. Please call for an appointment as she is frequently out of her office attending various meetings and events throughout the community.
