Los Cabos is strengthening its overstretched garbage collection fleet with 38 new trucks acquired by the Environmental Sanitation Trust through an investment of more than 154 million pesos (about $8.6 million USD).
The purchase addresses one of the municipality’s most persistent problems: trash that has gone uncollected for days in some neighborhoods. The new fleet includes 20 garbage collection trucks, 10 flatbed trucks and 8 dump trucks. Officials say the vehicles will help optimize collection routes and improve service efficiency in residential areas and public spaces.
Lilzi Fregoso, president of the Los Cabos Hotel Association and member of the trust’s Technical Subcommittee, said the investment marks an important step toward improving infrastructure in area.
“We are very pleased to have completed another environmental cleanup project,” Fregoso said. “A few years ago, we also obtained garbage collection trucks, because garbage collection is one of the major problems facing our municipality.”
Officials say the additional vehicles will allow the city to handle large volumes of waste more efficiently, addressing a long-standing weakness in the local sanitation system while strengthening overall urban cleaning efforts.
The Environmental Sanitation Trust plans to continue evaluating projects aimed at improving social infrastructure and public services. The goal, officials say, is to deliver lasting improvements that benefit both residents and visitors.
With the city’s population continuing to grow each year, the arrival of the new fleet signals a step toward addressing a problem that has frustrated the community for years. The trucks were displayed upon delivery at the delegation parking lot in Cabo San Lucas, offering residents a visible sign of progress in tackling the garbage collection crisis.
