Pure Foundation seeks to install free water stations in Los Cabos
BY WAYNE DROPS
We do really need this. Let’s light a candle for it to succeed.
The system that Pure Foundation is working on will offer free water in public spaces, comply with official quality standards, and will seek to operate with renewable energy.
The stations extract humidity from the environment and convert it into water suitable for human consumption.
The Pure Foundation has the objective of installing at least three drinking water vending machines in the municipality of Los Cabos for free use by the community. These machines work with a steam distillation process, obtaining “water from the environment”.
At a press conference, Giancarlo Muñoz, director of the project, explained that the cost of these facilities is around 600 thousand pesos. On December 20 at 5 pm, the “Hydratemos Los Cabos” event will take place at Torote Restaurant. It includes a gala, a charity auction with luxury items, and exclusive experiences.
This event is expected to raise up to 2.5 million pesos to install the first three stations. For now, it has been confirmed that the first will be located outside of the Technological Institute of Higher Studies (ITES). That is located on the Medical Corridor behind Soriana Cabo San Lucas.
The “infinite” hydration machines have the capacity to produce between 250 and 500 liters per day, which are generated with cutting-edge technology to extract water for human consumption from air humidity, with minimal environmental impact. Their lifetime can reach up to 25 years with optimal care.
The Pure Foundation highlighted that the hydration stations will offer the service for free since they will be in public spaces. Regarding the quality of the water, they assured that it complies with the Official Mexican Standard 127.
The project is being worked on in collaboration with other organized civil society groups such as Coparmex, the Center for Renewable Energy and Environmental Quality (CERCA), and the Association for Food Safety (ASA).
“The lack of water began many years ago, before we said that water stress was projected to reach 2025 and we are nowhere near reaching day 0. We continue to grow, and the lack of water will continue. We are not only looking to bring machines that make water from the air and permeate that, but we also seek to bring alternatives to scenarios that do not look positive for the community.” said Giancarlo Muñoz. NOTE: His position is above in the 3rd paragraph.
This project, the first of its kind in Los Cabos, seeks to mitigate the municipality’s water deficit, which faces a lack of 600 liters per second, according to OOMSAPAS, due to the low performance of sources such as the desalination plant, which operates at 36% of its capacity.
Currently, the Smart Spaces offices in the Plaza Transpeninsular, located next to the Holiday Inn, have a station and passersby who circulate in the area refill their bottles and even water jugs for free. For more information about the event, you can consult the Foundation via social networks.
