According to data shared in an interview with Southern Baja California news media outlets by Rodrigo Esponda, director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, tourists visiting Los Cabos spend two and a half more time than in Cancun and the Caribbean. Tourists who choose Los Cabos, BCS are spending more here largely because they prefer sophisticated activities, security, and diversified experiences that go beyond the beach.
Esponda pointed out that, unlike the Mexican Caribbean, Los Cabos offers an experience that attracts tourists with a higher purchasing power. These visitors usually leave their vacation accommodations up to 80% of the time, enjoying activities in the region that range from desert tours in 4 X 4 vehicles, to hiking in our serene mountainous areas and going on visits into town where they indulge in the rich, cultural and delicious items on the menu.
In addition to the variety of activities, the dry climate of Los Cabos stands out as a decisive factor for tourists looking to escape the humidity characteristic of the Caribbean and Cancun.
"This unique climate and the variety of outdoor activities, such as mountain excursions or marine exploration, position us as a preferred destination,” Esponda told reporters, highlighting that 75% of tourists come to Los Cabos without considering other alternative destinations.
Of course, one of the other advantages of flying into Cabo from any state in the southwestern United States is the short flights to get here. Some of them, arrive directly and others experience mild layovers in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Arizona and Houston.
Esponda also highlighted the diversity of accommodations in Los Cabos, which ranges from three-star hotels with breakfast included to exclusive luxury resorts. Although our Los Cabos destination has 85 hotels, of which 15 are high-end, tourists usually choose to explore the surroundings rather than stay in their facilities, thus increasing local consumption in restaurants, tours and cultural activities.
This high-profile tourism has been driven in part by the US market, which continues to be the main source of tourists to Cabo, maintaining the same high occupancy levels our region experienced in 2023, and even surpassing the records that were set in 2019. Unlike other Mexican destinations that depend on mass tourism, Los Cabos has established itself as a point of interest for a demanding visitor profile with high purchasing power, attracted by the offer of security, and the diversity of activities that are not found in other beach destinations in the country of Mexico.
Although Cancun, the Caribbean and Vallarta also have booze cruises, off-road ATV excursions, and horseback and camel rides, those destinations also have a much-publicized history of violence perpetrated by cartel gangsters that have frightened vacationers from various regions of the U.S. and Canada. Southern Baja California and Cabo, in particular, remain one of the safest cities in the world, not just in Mexico.
"I have been to Mexico City, Vallarta and Cancun, as well as Guanajuato and Mazatlan," said Richard Syth, a graduate of Humboldt State University, living in Seattle, Washington.
"Cabo San Lucas is where I have spent more of my vacations. I simply love it here. It's close to home. I arrive here rather quickly and have always enjoyed my stay."
"This was my girlfriend's first time visiting Cabo,'' said Christopher Knapp, a Louisiana Lafayette University grad employed with Salesforce.
"We got a great deal at Garza Blanco, and she has totally loved everything so far."
And that pretty much sums up this recent report. People enjoy spending their time and money, here rather than other vacation locations out there on the mainland of Mexico and the Yucatan peninsula. ,
