According to official projections, by 2040, the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo forming Los Cabos are expected to reach 800,000 inhabitants.
The population is hovering around 300,000 residents, far exceeding what anyone could have envisioned for this once-sleepy fishing community.
A recent study carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and the Coordinating Council of Los Cabos highlighted in the last 20 years, the municipality has grown by 244% meaning on average, every seven to eight years, the city doubles in size. In 2010, the population of Los Cabos was only 70,000 residents
The general director of Social Development, Cuauhtémoc Carmona Álvarez, pointed out that this growth is due to the outstanding tourism development of the area saying “It is the municipality that has the most population growth due to the tourism development it is acquiring. In that sense, the projections for 2040 … we are talking about 700 thousand and 800 thousand inhabitants. Without a doubt this is a quantity of population that we have to attend to, it is important to mention that Baja California Sur together with Tlaxcala are the least populated states. In approximately 15 to 20 years from now, we will undoubtedly exceed over a million and with the needs that the population requires, both in public and emergency services.”
Given the lack of social infrastructure and public services that the destination currently faces, the question arises as to whether Los Cabos is really prepared to practically reach one million inhabitants. Carmona Álvarez stressed that the necessary diagnoses and planning are already in place to achieve orderly growth.
“Because we already have this forecast, we have the goal that the municipality has to move towards the 2030 agenda of the United Nations with what has to do mainly with the water issue, urban planning, where basic services are going to be necessary. Now we have to enter into a dynamic of transformation,” he added.
According to Carmona Álvarez, he estimates, that Los Cabos has an annual growth between 14 and 16 percent, which exceeds the national average. Local authorities have indicated that this is because Los Cabos is very attractive as it offers better job opportunities and a better quality of life than other cities.
Los Cabos does have concerns such as lack of water and being at Land’s End, the cost of living is considerably higher due to transportation costs. But Los Cabos is one of the safest cities in the world and in Mexico.
Despite problems only getting worse the popularity of Cabo and its attractive allure will continue to bring more inhabitants. We all need to prepare for the coming changes because there’s no denying it is a nice place to live.
