My husband and I love to discover new places and sometimes just walk around to see what we get ourselves into. You will never know what you will discover but so far, we have discovered some goodness.
Our daughter came to visit and we went to exchange some money at the Plaza del Artisano (next to the drinking time bar) so we could spend it on gifts to send back. As we walked around the security guy came over and asked if we had tried the new restaurant at the center of this plaza. Well, the answer was no, but my curiosity had me sitting at the bar drinking a margarita and talking to the workers there about their concept. The restaurant is called Los Taco Locos. Its location is nice because it’s surrounded by fluttering banners, shopping, and spa locations and the staff is so pleasant.
Their tacos are great but what I was interested in was the dish of the day. They change it up all the time and I didn’t know this until I came back. Their dish that day was Carne en su jugo, beef chunks in its au jus. The beef is so tender it’s in jus mixed with green chile, whole pinto beans, onions, cilantro and creamy avocado to top it off. I loved it so much, I came back two days later to find out they changed it all the time. So I went with their dish of the day again, Costillas - pork ribs in green chile sauce with refried beans, white rice, tortillas and spicy red salsa. The portions are so great and the daily special also comes with your choice of refreshing agua. They change those waters daily too. I had the hibiscus because the rich flavor of the ribs had the right balance. I mean I am going to be there every day just to see what they have created because so far it’s been hitting the flavor button.
I love oysters and I thought I would just find a place that would just have oysters when I first got here. It would make sense but I didn’t. One day I just figured I would plug into my phone, an oyster place and surprisingly enough The Oyster House came up. I was walking past it this whole time and didn’t realize it but it was there for the past 6 months. We were on a mission to take a walk to the center and try it. It’s a very small space with an open kitchen and you can see the chef create all the dishes. You can sit at the bar and watch him chuck your oysters, prepare your clams and cook whatever your heart desires.
It was started by a group of friends that wanted to do just that, have a good seafood joint to relax in. You have to know that when you go there, it will take some time to get your food but that’s anywhere you go in Mexico.
The oysters smelled like the ocean – they didn’t need anything but I like to put a little lemon on mine. Their mignotte was on point and you don’t need much because otherwise, you will just cover the natural flavor that the oysters bring. But there was a dish on that menu that had me dancing. The prepared ceviche clam, I mean it has the clam but they also cut the fish of the day and mix it into it with their secret chile sauce. I had them bring me a side cup of the sauce so I could drink it. It was the spiced-up lime juice that just made me salivate on each bite. They gave us a stack of tostadas that were almost like crushed millet but it was a corn tortilla they made. The dish was a hit in my books and I have taken people there just to have that one dish as an appetizer and then go on to the next place but in reality, we end up ordering more oysters and just sit there.
There is a place across the street from Walmart, called Antojeria Don Taco (under the tattoo place. I feel the need to really explain because there is a lot going on in that area) If you blink you have missed it. There is so much going on in this area but let me tell you what’s going on with flavors that you don’t want to miss. This small place has some crunchy and gooey quesadillas. They make the tortillas from scratch and fill it with a lot of goodness, you can also customize it but if you choose what’s on the menu, you are not going to regret it. They deep fry the fresh masa to make it super crunchy golden brown. She was making one for herself and let me try it while I waited for some birria. I was in love with this situation. I ended up ordering one and dipped my birria into it while I ate chunks of beef that just melted in my mouth. I usually like my birria with Spanish-style rice but the quesadilla hit all aspects of my afternoon that day. You would think it would be super rich but it was pretty light.
