The XV Ayuntamiento of Los Cabos has received 1,000 copies of the newly reprinted Importancia de Cabo San Lucas, a key historical text chronicling the region’s past. The donation, provided at no cost by Fundación Mecenas del Libro, A.C., will be distributed to schools and interested residents as part of an effort to strengthen local historical knowledge.
The book, written by W. Michael Mathes and José Andrés Cota Sandoval, traces the origins and cultural richness of Cabo San Lucas and Baja California Sur. The 2025 edition will support the municipality’s “Cultura archivística: memoria, historia e identidad” program, led by the city’s Institutional Archive System.
Why the Push for Local History
Domingo Valentín Castro Burgoin, director of the Institutional Archive System, said the books are especially important given Los Cabos’ rapid population growth and the constant arrival of families from other states and countries. Many newcomers—whether Mexican nationals relocating for work or foreign expats settling long-term—arrive with little understanding of the region’s colonial past, indigenous roots or economic transformation.
Castro Burgoin emphasized that making historical resources accessible helps new generations develop a connection to the place they now call home. The donation is part of a broader municipal push to preserve and share archival materials at a time when state lawmakers have also called for mandatory local history courses in BCS schools.
Two Public Presentations in August
On August 21, the municipality held two public presentations of the book. The first took place at Casa de la Cultura “Prof. Alfredo Green González” in San José del Cabo. The second was held at the UABCS extension campus in Cabo San Lucas, where director Juan de Jesús Pérez Agúndez praised the effort to make regional heritage more widely available.
Historians Luis Alberto Trasviña Moreno and Jorge Luis Amao Manríquez served as commentators, offering reflections on the documentary value of the work and the historical evolution of southern Baja. Both sessions were moderated by Jaime Adalberto Castro Ceseña.

Copies of Importancia de Cabo San Lucas will be distributed to local schools first, with remaining books available to the general public through the Institutional Archive System. The book is being offered free of charge, part of the donation agreement with Fundación Mecenas del Libro.
