With a new, looong name and many luxurious additions
Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton marks the brand’s arrival in Baja California Sur, adding to the company’s portfolio of award-winning hotels. A of couple years ago, the global hospitality leader announced two franchise agreements for the upcoming conversions of the 90-room Perla La Paz, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in La Paz and 70-room Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in San Jose del Cabo. Onirius Hospitality Advisors served as the principal advisor for the development and launch of both hotels.
“The Pacific Coast of Mexico represents an integral role in Hilton’s larger organic growth strategy across this diverse destination,” said Mario Carbone, managing director, development, Mexico and Central America, Hilton. “These two important hotel conversions propel our vision forward of introducing new brands in new destinations while providing value for our owners and catering to our evolving guests’ needs.” This was exciting news since both hotels seemed old and in need of remodeling. The Perla La Paz looked, for the longest time, like a gray ghost in the middle of downtown La Paz, completely abandoned and in ruins after a worker's union strike.
As for the Tropicana Inn, it was being operated by the original owners for over 30 years when it was acquired by the Hilton brand and shut down operations in 2022. I remember very well when it closed. Everyone was wondering why, who had bought it, if the same owners were going to remodel it or sell it to Grupo Questro developers of Puerto Los Cabos. It was a total mystery for about a year. I was personally delighted, as the Hilton brand is a symbol of quality and luxury. I thought the chic boutique hotel concept offered by the Tapestry brand would be a great fit for our beloved Tropicana Inn, and I was not wrong.
“Both Perla La Paz and Tropicana Los Cabos will be great additions to our expanding Tapestry Collection by Hilton portfolio across Mexico and the brand’s global portfolio of over 115 hotels currently welcoming guests around the world with more than 100 under development,” said Jenna Hackett, brand leader, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. “Both of these unique properties encapsulate the vibrant personality of La Paz and San Jose del Cabo respectively and we look forward to offering guests authentic experiences at each property as they explore Baja California Sur.”
Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton opened a week ago and it was totally worth the wait. They threw a huge grand opening with delicious fancy cocktails, farm fresh oysters galore and hot flamenco dancers. Everyone in town with a recognizable name attended the party. The property is tucked into a quiet enclave near the city’s center and offers proximity to some of San Jose del Cabo’s top destinations for dining, vibrant art galleries and local shopping.
Luckily, in my humble opinion, it still captures the Mexican colonial style from its veranda
to its exposed dark-wood beams adorning the high ceilings. The traditional design seamlessly continues throughout the hotel’s 70 rooms, including two suites, featuring authentic Mexican artwork and those of world-famous surrealist artist Leonora Carrington. The overall design brings up the spirit of our historic center. The focal point of the hotel is a gorgeous floor-to-ceiling glass bar within its onsite restaurant where guests can dine in the al fresco café, charming courtyard or the second-level veranda.
As for Perla de la Paz, there are no delivery dates yet. Based on the hotel’s condition, it will take more time to remodel it.
Luis Ruiz from Onirius Hospitality Advisor said, “We are excited to partner with Hilton to convert and introduce these two storied properties for guests traveling to Baja California Sur. Coupled with Hilton’s strategic vision for Mexico growth and prowess as a hospitality leader, we’re delighted to provide guests with a truly unforgettable experience as part of Tapestry Collection by Hilton whether they’re traveling to the state’s capital of La Paz or the laid-back getaway of San Jose del Cabo.”
