Congratulations to Mar Libre and their dedicated team of volunteers for raising 110,000 pesos (about US $5,500) on Saturday, November 30. The benefit concert, which is Mar Libre’s annual fundraiser, was a collaboration between Canadian blues, funk and soul band, The Bradley/McGillivray Band, featuring special guest Terry Townson and the local group of artists who volunteer for Mar Libre on a regular basis, Michael O’neil, Paul Freeman and Diego Ramirez on sound.
Since 2015, Mar Libre has organized 115 beach and underwater cleanups, removing over 250 tons of trash from the mangrove and the ocean. These volunteers meet monthly and focus on diving cleanups that require specialized equipment.
In addition to these, this year, Mar Libre removed 9 derelict boats and 4 ghost fishing nets from the La Paz bay.
The money raised during the event is for the salary of their only paid staff member for 2025, whose job is to teach at the different schools in La Paz, educating children on environmental issues, prevention and solutions. Mar Libre is present in schools for the entire school year.
Big thank you to all those who contributed and if you would like to donate, learn more and participate in upcoming cleanups or other events, you can find more information on Mar Libre’s Facebook page or by Whatsapp at: + 52 612 154 985. Special thanks to Ruth McGillivray and Sheldon Bradley, who travelled to Baja for this purpose and to Pablo Ahuja for leading all the volunteers.
