Huge demand for it, and for good reason
This time of year, Mexico plays a vital role in one of the biggest sports celebrations in the USA. As the world’s largest producer of avocados, supplying 45% of the international market, Mexico sees about 90% of its avocados exported to the U.S.
In Michoacán alone, over 160,000 hectares are dedicated to cultivating the so-called ‘Green Gold’ for events like the Super Bowl, though the demand spikes on other occasions too, such as Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Battle Day of Puebla, which has gained popularity over time.
Year after year, demand grows. The Super Bowl remains the peak day for avocado sales in the United States, with May 5 following closely due to its increasing integration into the American diet.
For the 59th edition of the Super Bowl, Michoacán will send over 150,000 tons of avocados to the United States, ensuring millions enjoy their guacamole on Sunday, February 9, reports Claudio Méndez, head of the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco).
Guacamole became a Super Bowl tradition in the 1990s, initially promoted as the perfect game day snack by the avocado industry through clever marketing strategies, including the “Guacamole Bowl,” which featured NFL players and their families’ chip dip recipes, and free samples for sports reporters.
By 2015, Mexican avocados were well-known, though brand recognition was still low. Since Super Bowl XLIX, where Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to victory over the Seattle Seahawks, the commercial importance of Mexican avocados has surged dramatically.
In the 2023-2024 growing season, the United States imported 2.48 billion pounds of avocados. The average American consumed 9.2 pounds, and about 70% of households included avocados in their diet.
Today, guacamole is not just a culinary delight but a Super Bowl staple, breaking world records and becoming a fundamental part of game day parties—affectionately dubbed ‘Guacamole Day.’ Indeed, the Super Bowl has become the top occasion for avocado consumption.
Beyond its taste, guacamole is celebrated for its health benefits, including improving heart, skin, and hair health, aiding in weight loss, cancer prevention, and bolstering the immune and digestive systems.
Truly, guacamole is one of the world’s most perfect foods. Its rise in popularity at Super Bowl parties, as a healthier alternative to highly-processed dips, clearly shows its appeal. Viva Guacamole!
