New Combined Cycle Plant to Generate Electricity in Baja California Sur

Announced at the daily press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum

Bringing electricity to Los Cabos can be complicated due to factors such as the distance between the areas to be electrified and power sources, the uneven topography, the high tourist demand for energy, and the cost of installing and maintaining the electrical infrastructure.

For this reason, $272 million USD will be invested in the construction of a new power plant with a capacity of 240 megawatts and the creation of 850 direct jobs. It is expected to be operational in 2028.

This project belongs to the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission). Emilia Calleja, director of the energy production company, explained that the construction of the plant will have the flexibility to use natural gas or diesel as fuels depending on the area’s energy availability, “in addition to being able to serve the region more expeditiously due to the geographic characteristics of the location where it will be installed.”

“It will guarantee a constant, efficient, and reliable supply for a region where tourism is widely recognized and is a tourism development area in our country,” the federal official stated.

This project is considered part of the National Electric System Strengthening and Expansion Plan and is key to strengthening the state’s electricity system, especially in Los Cabos, where energy demand has increased due to tourism and population growth.

The implementation of this combined-cycle plant will achieve a reduction of up to 1.3 million tons of CO₂, ensuring cleaner energy in Southern California.
