A Community Action Initiative

Three students from the Peninsular Institute in Los Cabos have developed an innovative alarm system, SHAR, designed to save lives during hurricanes and tropical storms. The device alerts families in high-risk areas when nearby stream levels rise, issuing warnings at 40 and 60 centimeters to prompt early evacuations.

Recognizing the urgent need for such a system—given that over 30,000 families in Los Cabos are at risk—Sophia, Violeta, and Bella began their project under the guidance of their physics teacher, Anhia Jimenez. Initially created for a science fair, SHAR quickly gained attention and was later presented at a government-hosted competition in Baja California Sur.

With support from the Ministry of Civil Protection, the first SHAR device was installed at Arroyo Salto Seco in Cabo San Lucas. The team also trained residents on how to use the system effectively.

As the first system of its kind in Mexico, SHAR has drawn national interest, with other regions facing similar weather risks eager to adopt it. The students now aim to present their project at the Science Expo in Milan this March. To fund their trip, they have launched a GoFundMe campaign (link here), seeking to raise $3,000.

Their commitment to this life-saving initiative showcases innovation, determination, and social responsibility.
