Rewarding citizens for proactively taking care of their civic duties and paying their property tax on time is an annual financial incentive that the municipality of La Paz offers to homeowners.
Property taxes are one of the main sources of revenue for the Municipality of La Paz and they are allocated to public services such as street lighting, garbage collection, and other infrastructure projects benefiting all of us. A revenue stream that is essential for the continuous development of this municipality, as it helps maintain services that directly impact the quality of life of its citizens.
This year, to encourage payments, the Municipality of La Paz launched a temporary discount program on October 16, 2024, valid until March 31, 2025, offering a bigger window compared to previous years.
Those who took advantage of this already were discounted 30% off their 2025 property tax if they paid between October 16 and October 31, 2024, and 25% off if they paid before November 2024.
Residents paying their 2025 fiscal year property taxes early can receive a 20% discount if paid in December 2024, a 15% discount: in January 2025, 10% discount: in February and March 2025
For those with outstanding debts from 2024 or earlier, the program includes a 15% discount on payments made in December 2024 and a 50% discount on fines and late fees on payments made between October and December 2024
According to the Municipal Revenue Law for La Paz, property taxes must be paid in full during January of each year or in advance for two-month periods within the first 10 days of January, March, May, July, September, and November.
Penalties for prolonged delinquencies may include different measures and legal action such as payment notifications, property seizures, and even court-ordered executions, where debts may be settled by selling the property.
For some residents, these discounts provide a huge relief. They allow a better opportunity to manage their finances while meeting their tax obligations, making homeownership more accessible. Aside from the other advantages, this also helps many locals to keep their ancestral homes within the family unit.
Paying property taxes on time not only helps residents avoid additional fees and legal complications but also directly supports the collective well-being and urban development in La Paz and other towns under its municipality including Todo Santos, Pescadero and La Ventana.
This push towards more fiscally responsible citizens is essential for better urban planning and infrastructure setup, especially with the increase of new expats moving here each year. Currently, only 45% of property taxes across the municipality are up to date, so if you own a property within the La Paz municipality boundaries, this is your call to fulfil your duty and benefit from a significant discount.
