On Sunday, December 1, a new Los Cabos fishing record was reached when 92-year-old Joan Porter, of Pleasanton, California, hooked an 8 lb Dorado/Mahi Mahi and an 85 lb Wahoo, with the assistance of Ed Schartner from Feeding Los Cabos Kids Foundation. The charming and sweet Joan Porter bagged five different species that day which included a Yellow Fin Tuna, Bonita Tuna, and a Marlin.
“The most amazing part of the day was over 4 hours of watching 1,000’s of dolphins swimming and jumping near our boat, ‘’ said Michelle Schartner. The world-famous Bisbee International’s $3 million in prize money tournaments held every October have never had someone nearing 100 years old bring in such an impressive haul of five species during an 8-hour outing at sea.
“I have been fishing a long time,” said Joan, who was born in Houston, Texas and became an educator who taught physical education and history in Hayward, CA.
In all, Joan has taken vacations and/or visited 110 different countries during her lifetime. She has owned her timeshare at Hacienda del Mar for 25 years, and the three close-knit friends enjoyed the fruits of their fishing labor with you hook ’em, we cook ’em chefs at Tii Bar, who cooked and served their tasty flavors from the sea.
It took Joan all of 8 minutes to bring aboard her Dorado catch, which is an incredible feat for a woman her age and size, as the sweet and petite, retired and widowed educator enjoyed her fish-catching adventure without any thought of becoming the oldest person to accomplish such a feat in Cabo.
Aside from catching fish, Joan would like to snag herself a companion after four years alone. It should be someone in good health, who loves to travel, and is economically in a good financial situation, because as she said, “I’m not a nurse or a purse.”
When Joan arrives in Cabo, she historically stays for five weeks. She is a local expert on where the finest restaurants are in Los Cabos and provided several recommendations before she departed.
