The Palo Escopeta city dump, located northeast of San José del Cabo, erupted in flames on Wednesday, engulfing an estimated 14 hectares (almost 35 acres). The fire prompted immediate action from brave firefighters, who worked tirelessly through the night. By this morning, the fire was finally under control.
However, the aftermath is creating a new set of challenges. Garbage trucks cannot access the site and are now forced to make the long haul to La Paz for disposal. As if this wasn’t enough of a headache, the Cabo San Lucas city dump at Migriño remains closed due to a heated legal dispute between the city government and the operating company. Despite being fired, the company refuses to vacate, leaving garbage trucks with no choice but to also head to La Paz.
This chaos comes just days after Mayor Christian Agúndez initiated a massive garbage collection campaign to address the growing piles of trash in the area caused by a lack of functioning trucks. The situation highlights ongoing struggles in waste management that seem to pile up just as quickly as the trash itself. Here’s hoping for a swift resolution—our beaches and streets depend on it! Sigh. 🗑️🔥
