None of them big or dangerous
Over 2,400 earthquakes hit Los Cabos in September, prompting the attention of Mexico’s seismological center and our own civil protection agency.
One of the first ones reached a 4.3 degrees on the Richter scale and was felt all around. Most of the following ones were not felt, or felt only by people who were awake in the middle of the night, whether because they were having a party or a hangover. Oh, and those freaks that wake up at 5 am in the morning.
The cause, according to experts, might be the formation of a new geological fault near or through San Jose dl Cabo, where all the epicenters were located. Yes, Palmilla, Cerro Colorado, Querencia and Cabo Real areas. Yikes!
Most earthquakes have been recorded at depths of between 10 and 11 kilometers, with an average of 100 events per day during the month of September.
Although these earthquakes have not caused significant damage so far, the authorities are paying special attention due to the location of the epicenters, which have mostly occurred on land. This could indicate a possible reconfiguration of the tectonic plates in the area, although further research is required to confirm whether it is a new geological fault.
The Los Cabos region is seismic due to the faults that cross both the subsoil and the nearby maritime areas: "Most of the earthquakes have been of low magnitude and have not been perceptible by the population, but we must not let our guard down. We recommend that the community maintain a family civil protection plan and follow official instructions," he said.Shaken, not stirred, please.
