There are more and more complaints on social media that Los Cabos has become too expensive. At the same time, its reputation as a food lovers’ paradise has grown dramatically over the past few years. The Gringo Gazette has decided that it is important to showcase local restaurants that provide good food and service at a reasonable price, from street food to fine dining. In each issue, three restaurants (one from each of the three towns) will be featured in print with an expanded review online. This first story focuses on Italian food.
San Jose del Cabo: Come a Casa. Located in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo on Ignacio Zaragoza, Come a Casa has been open for just over a year. This new modern restaurant offers a full menu with appetizers, salads, homemade pasta, and wood-fired pizza and Lasagna. Executive Chef Mauricio Lopez has created pasta sauces that are not only flavorful and delicious, but the tomato sauce is smooth and without an acidic aftertaste. The appetizers include burrata cheese in a light sauce, beef carpaccio, a few salad choices and pizza bread. The homemade pasta is wonderful, and several preparations are offered – carbonara, arrabbiata, amatriciana, ragu, as well as with shrimp, clams and short ribs. There is also lasagna and pizza from the wood-fired oven. Of course, no Italian meal would be complete without dessert and there are several from which to choose: tiramisu, gelato, lemon tart and more. The appetizer portions should definitely be shared, including the salads, and the portions of the pasta are also big enough to share if you are planning to have an appetizer and dessert. We usually will share a Caesar Salad, order our preferred pasta (amatriciana and ragu) and share the tiramisu. But last time we also tried the lemon tart, which was amazing. Dessert was enhanced with a glass of limoncello. Wine, beer, cocktails, and mocktails are available to complement your meal. The restaurant is family-owned and operated and the service is excellent. Reservations can only be made over the phone (624 177 1536) and are a must. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063764610338
Cabo San Lucas: Panache. Located on 20 de Noviembre between Leona Vicario and Narciso Mendoza, Panache is a European restaurant with only about 10 tables. The Palo de Arco and mural-painted wall create a nice atmosphere as do the servers’ striped t-shirts, giving Panache a European feel. Brenda, the co-owner and manager, greets the guests and leads them to their table for you to enjoy her husband Cedric’s European creations. You can start your meal with great appetizers like deviled eggs, stuffed mushrooms, escargot, or one of several salads. The restaurant offers several homemade pastas with a variety of sauces (tomato, pesto, pistachio) and additions – meatballs, beef, shrimp, seafood, vegan. Main courses include the catch-of-the-day with a meuniere almondine soy sauce, pork shank, steak frites and cordon blue chicken. The table is served freshly made rolls with two flavored kinds of butter. Of course, cocktails and wines are available to enhance your meal. When it comes to dessert, the tiramisu is big enough for a table of four and delicious. Every item on the menu has large enough portions to share. At one meal, we started with deviled eggs (my favorite), shared a Caesar Salad, shared a fettuccine with creamy pesto and ordered both the pork shank and steak with pistachio sauce. The meal was finished off with the tiramisu. Even sharing most courses, we each had some of the main courses to take home. The service is excellent, and you are never rushed. Reservations are a must, especially during high season. Valet parking is available. https://www.facebook.com/panacherestaurant
Todos Santos: Il Giardino. Located on Calle del Huerto, the first road as you enter Todos Santos, on a hill that overlooks the Pacific and the valley to Pescadero, Il Giardino is the creation of Daniela Borghini, a true Italian chef. Il Giardino has outdoor seating, either open or under a palapa. The atmosphere is great, especially at sunset. With a full kitchen, bar and outdoor kitchen with a wood-fired oven, the selections on the menu are great. To start your Italian meal, you can select from appetizers (bruschetta, focaccia, portobello mushrooms, carpaccio) or from several salads (Caesar, Caprese, mixed, Greek or Mediterranean). The homemade pastas include fettuccine, cannelloni, spaghetti and short pastas with several preparations – lemon, shrimp, carbonara, Bolognese, arrabbiata, amatriciana. Lasagna is also available. If you are interested in beef, fish or chicken, there are main courses with these dishes. The main courses include a green salad or roasted potatoes. With a wood-fired pizza oven, as you can imagine, the pizzas are wonderful and lots of different kinds are available, including a half calzone and half pizza, with the calzone folded into the pizza. We have tried almost everything on the menu. The appetizer portions are big enough to share and we have had the bruschetta and the carpaccio several times. I love the Fettucine Limoné and my wife, the Fettuccine Gamberi. In addition to the menu, there is always an appetizer, main course and dessert special described by the server and on a blackboard by the kitchen. Limoncello is a fitting end to every meal. The service is excellent. https://www.facebook.com/IlGiardinoTodosSantos
