Last Sunday marked the 14th Anniversary of Ciclovia, an event that temporarily closed downtown streets from 7 to 11 am for a morning of community and exercise. Sadly, it was announced that this would be the final edition. The decision came amid challenges including lack of support from traffic authorities, complaints from downtown businesses, taxi drivers, tourist transport companies, and commuters.
Mario Meave, the dedicated founder and organizer along with his volunteers, made the difficult choice to discontinue Ciclovia. Despite their efforts and passion, sustaining the event proved too challenging without adequate financial support, sponsorships, and community involvement.
While there are calls to relocate Ciclovia to another area, these efforts hinge on securing the necessary resources and commitments from stakeholders. It’s a bittersweet farewell to Ciclovia, an event cherished by many for promoting health, community spirit, and car-free streets.
