In commemoration of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated around the world on March 8, some protests will take place in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo at government sites like the city hall and the government delegation. On March 8, 1908 about 130 workers of the Cotton factory in New York declared themselves on strike and occupied the place where they were employed. The owner of the company ordered the doors closed and a fire started, with the intention that the employees be desisted of their attitude. However, the flames spread and could not be controlled. The women burnt to death inside the factory. Two years later, a women’s meeting was convened in Copenhagen where it was proposed that March 8 be declared International Women’s Day in memory of the death of these workers. According to UN Women, the theme for International Women’s Day, 2022 (IWD 2022) is ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’. And no, it is not a day to congratulate women.
