And those who are told to show up work, should be paid double salary. The holiday commemorates the birth of Benito Juárez, a Mexican liberal who was president of Mexico from 1858 to 1872. He was Mexico’s first president of indigenous origin, born in Oaxaca as part of the Zapotec ethnicity. He studied law, was at one point the President of the Supreme Court and won the war against the French intervention. His quote saying, “Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace,” which to this date is the basis of Mexico’s no intervention in other countries’ policies. His is the face in the Mexican 500 pesos blue bill.
