Traditional Garropa Tournament in Comondú

The Traditional Garropa Fishing Tournament is a competitive sporting event set to take place in Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, within the municipality of Comondú. Scheduled for May 1st and 2nd, the event brings together fishing enthusiasts, both local and visiting, to participate in a structured and high-stakes competition focused on catching garropa (grouper).
The tournament features a guaranteed prize pool of 3,479 dollars , distributed among the top three participants, with additional jackpot categories that include species such as curricata, pargo, and cochito. This structure encourages a broader range of fishing strategies and rewards versatility among competitors.
Participants are required to register on May 1st at the local tourist dock during the afternoon, where event guidelines and logistics are organized. The main fishing day takes place on May 2nd, beginning early in the morning, creating a full-day experience centered on skill, timing, and knowledge of the local fishing grounds, particularly the estuary zone.
Beyond the competition itself, the event serves as a gathering point for the regional fishing community, promoting local traditions, tourism, and sustainable engagement with marine resources. It offers a dynamic environment where participants not only compete for prizes but also share experiences, techniques, and a collective appreciation for sport fishing in one of Baja California Sur’s notable coastal areas.
