4,000 Kilos (9,000 pounds) of Catarina Clams Seized in Ciudad Constitución

The Almeja Catarina (Argopecten ventricosus) or Pacific Calico Scallop is a type of scallop-like mollusk that is highly sought after. The harvest season for it is closed. It’s a hermaphrodite with a reproductive peak from December to March.

The find occurred when elements of the Mexican Navy and Public Security spotted an abandoned pick-up. Inside, 50 sacks were found. Both the clams and the vehicle were seized and are now in the hands of the Federal Jurisdiction based in Ciudad Constitución who will open an investigation.

One of the main goals of the Mexican Navy and Mexican Police is the protection of marine resources and compliance with the laws that regulate the exploitation of closed species, thus contributing to the sustainability and conservation of the marine environment.

  1. Good, I wish they would not allow the foreign ships with the big nets to fish. They take everything, leave nothing and move on since their area is now fishless due to overfishing.
