The Tree Cities of the World badge, a global program by the Arbor Day Foundation (ADF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), recognizes cities dedicated to expanding and nurturing urban green spaces. This initiative highlights cities that meet five key standards: having local authority on urban forestry, implementing regulations for the protection and growth of urban trees, maintaining detailed information on green spaces, allocating a budget for urban tree management, and celebrating trees with community events.
In Mexico and Latin America, this program is made possible through “Reforestamos México,” a civil society group that supports cities applying for this prestigious badge.
La Paz recently earned this recognition for its ambitious reforestation program, Urban Lungs. This initiative has significantly expanded green areas in parks, schools, and other public spaces, aiming to improve air quality and environmental sustainability. To further this mission, the municipal nursery of La Paz is set to receive 25,000 plants donated by Proforestal, another civil association in Mexico. These plants will play a vital role in growing the city’s green spaces, as announced by Daniel Cabral, General Director of Municipal Public Services.
The municipal nursery, located in Eco Park, is equipped to cultivate and care for the plants, which will be distributed across the municipality in the coming months. This effort is part of the ongoing Urban Lungs program championed by Mayor Milena Quiroga.
“With the launch of the municipal nursery, one more commitment is made by the Municipal President to create a more sustainable city,” said Cabral.
La Paz’s green future is taking root, one tree at a time.
