The festive season is over, and if you’re not planning to repurpose your Christmas tree for Valentine’s Day, Independence Day, or Halloween, it’s time to think about eco-friendly disposal methods. Simply leaving it in a vacant lot or an uncultivated plot is not just irresponsible—it can turn your once joyful tree into a fire hazard as it becomes a magnet for other types of garbage, including plastics.
What should you do instead? Take it to a collection center! Throughout January, the municipality has designated specific sites to receive discarded Christmas trees. These trees are then transformed into compost, which benefits local farms, orchards, and ridges.
Jhonnatan Zamudio, the municipal director of city cleaning services, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “It is crucial that we avoid dumping trees on public roads, as regular collection services do not handle this type of waste. By taking them to the collection centers, we prevent environmental contamination and contribute positively to our community. The resulting compost is used to enrich the soil in our green spaces.”
Collection points are open at the Public Services facilities in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, Monday to Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. For more information about these locations, you can contact the San José del Cabo center at (624)123-4605 and the Cabo San Lucas center at (624) 143-2786.
