“The Bcsicletos” is a nonprofit organization in La Paz who’s have the bicycle as the main axis of social transformation and in the seek to make this city, safe, affordable and respectful of the environment.
On December 13, the will organize a protest to show their disagreement with the arrival of mega cruise ships to the bay of La Paz. This comes just days after the Koningsdam cruise ship arrived in this port with more than 2,000 foreign tourists.
This protest will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Dock and will end at the Malecon Kiosk around 7:00 p.m. During the event, there will be artistic presentations, such as drawings made by children and other cultural interventions, with the aim of raising awareness of the possible environmental risks that this type of mass tourism could cause.
What are the concerns their about mega cruises? According to the organization, the arrival of mega cruise ships to La Paz is more harmful than beneficial, as they point out that these large vessels can seriously damage the marine ecosystem by releasing contaminated waters
They also warn that they often leave residues such as hydrocarbons and heavy metals, which cause ocean acidification.
They mention that all this puts endemic species in the region at risk, such as corals, marine mammals and large predators, and that it could also negatively disturb the ecosystem.
They are also against the agreement between the Comprehensive Port Administration of Baja California Sur (API BCS) and the company Aquamayan Adventure, in which it is planned to use more than 355 000 sq. foot of the port of Pichilingue. planned to build a tourist complex with commercial areas, restaurants and recreational areas, designed to attract 150,000 cruise passengers a year. Similar to the Kuni project that was recently cancelled.
For them this type of mass tourism could cause overexploitation of natural resources and negatively affect the quality of life of the people who live in the area. Not only by harming the environment, but also negatively impacting the economy and infrastructure of La Paz.
They also say that activities that are really important to the region, such as coastal fishing and ecotourism, would be at risk due to pollution and competition for already limited resources.
