I don’t mind getting old if I don’t feel old or look old. I have been accused more than once of having a facelift or of using filters on my videos. I should probably use a filter, but I am a baby boomer and I don’t even really know how they work…plus it seems like cheating. About the facelift, that’s a hard no because: A. I don’t have that kind of cash lying around and B. I have seen too many weird looking people wandering around Cabo and California to roll the dice on that and C. I don’t want to miss a month + of gym time.
So, what’s the secret then? Well, any approach to having elastic and wrinkle free skin is going to be an “inside-out” scenario if you want it to work on a long-term basis. An inside out approach involves recognizing what causes wrinkles in the first place: Systemic inflammation. Inflammation, also known as “inflammaging” is at the root of all diseases associated with aging including the 4 “killers” of aging: Cancer, Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s and Diabetes.
What causes inflammation and therefore wrinkles and the 4 killers of aging? Note they all start with “S”:
Sugar: Sugar and high blood sugar are at the root of all inflammation and inflammaging. Alcohol is also sugar as far as your body is concerned. All alcohol is inflammatory.
Starch: Starch is recognized by your body as sugar, especially refined starches like most crackers and snack foods that come in a package.
Seed oils: You will find these accompanying the starches in the packages you are buying and in deep fried fast foods like french fries. They are highly inflammatory.
Smoking: Smoking causes wrinkles. And death. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for inflammation.
Sun exposure: A small amount of early morning sun is good for your vitamin D levels but lying in the sun for hours will absolutely destroy your skin.
Stress: Running on cortisol will wreck your skin and your general health.
Sleep: Or rather a lack thereof. Most people could improve their skin by improving their sleep hygiene.
Sunscreen: Or lack thereof. Use it religiously twice per day and you can actually reverse your skin age.
Ok. I also do some other stuff for my skin. But do those 8 things listed above first before you read this bit. No procedures or short cuts will help you if you don’t have the basics down. These are the other things that have made the most difference to my skin quality and texture.
Stem Cells plus ablative Lasers: This is technically non-surgical with no anesthesia and a fast healing time (3-7 days). Stem cells are injected into my face and then a C02 laser is applied. This has kept the collagen in my face tight and also improved the general quality and youthfulness of my skin.
Sauna and Steam room: I use sauna and steam as part of my anti-aging regime. Heat shock proteins are a form of healthy stress on our system and increase blood flow to our skin.
Supplements: Niacinamide, probiotics, vitamin D/K2 and collagen peptides are some of the supplements that help my skin. Niacinamide has a whitening effect on your skin and removes dark spots. It also boosts NAD in your body which slows down the aging process.
Microneedling machines: Several different microneedling machines are available in Cabo including Morpheus 8 and Scarlett. Radiofrequency is part of these two technologies also.
Stem cell IVS: Taking stem cells intravenously reduces inflammation although it seems to take a bit longer to notice. I didn’t notice a difference until about 6 weeks after this procedure.
Botox: I have been using botox since my mid-forties and as long as you don’t use too much, it’s pretty imperceptible. Make sure your doctor doesn’t overdo it. You should be able to move your eyebrows at least. If you look “shiny” or permanently angry then your doctor is blowing it.
Injectable peptides: These are not at all easy to procure these days but if you can get your hands on them, they work great for the skin. I use a stack including BPC 157, GHKcu and TB 500. They have to be injected subcutaneously, and they are not technically “legal” in the US, (not for any good reason by the way), so they are not in wide use yet.
GLP 1 drugs: I have used a microdose of GLP 1 drugs for their anti-neuro inflammatory benefits, (Liraglutide and Tirzepatide) for over a year now. GLP 1s have been discovered to offer a host of benefits other than just weight loss and for helping diabetics lower their A1C. Because of their anti-inflammatory properties they can also improve skin quality and reduce joint pain.
Hormone Replacement Therapy: If I had to choose one of these 10 things that made the most difference to my skin, it would have to be doing hormone replacement therapy. HRT has helped my sleep, my skin, my exercise regime and my attitude. Without balanced hormones it simply isn’t possible to slow the aging process.
Fillers: I only used filler one time about 6 years ago and I never needed it again which was strange. I am led to believe people need to redo filler after 2 years which would be very expensive at $500 per tube. With fillers, I would caution women not to get carried away with it. In my opinion, most of the people I see with filler also look weird. Better to have a few wrinkles than to look like a puffer fish.
So the bottom line is if you are going to cheat….don’t get caught! There is no point in doing something to your skin if it can be spotted as such! And again, skin care begins with taking care of your overall health.
