Yes, if Conditions Are Favorable
Businesspeople, hoteliers, and restaurateurs in El Médano are gearing up to usher in the New Year with a dazzling display of lights and colors that will brighten the Cabo bay. The final preparations are underway.
It has been 23 years since the inaugural fireworks show at El Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, an event that has drawn numerous visitors to celebrate the end of one year and the start of another. Garrit Araos, a local restaurant owner, mentioned that the Neighborhood Association of El Medano Pioneers (Colonos del Médano A.C.) is still finalizing details with the pyrotechnics coordinator to determine the best locations for the fireworks.
“We are considering two or three locations; everything will depend on the tidal conditions on those days. Currently, plans include positioning one near the Omega Bar (next to Mango Deck), another near the Corazón Hotel, all aimed towards the center of the bay. If feasible, a third location would be in the middle of these areas, and at midnight, the display would last about 5 or 6 minutes from two points.”
The event has faced challenges in the past. In 2020, the show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions on large gatherings. In 2021, an unfortunate incident occurred when a boat caught fire, reportedly from falling pyrotechnics debris during the display. This incident highlighted the risks involved, as hundreds of tourist service providers market this spectacle to enhance their New Year’s Eve tours and dinners.
Last December, the show was also called off due to unfavorable weather conditions linked to the cyclone season, which left insufficient beach space for safe fireworks setup and heightened the risk of fire near restaurant palapas.
This year, there is hopeful anticipation for the event to proceed without major issues. The display is eagerly awaited not only by local businesses but also by tourist service providers who promote the “pyrotechnics dance” for a profitable night. Local residents and tourists alike flock to El Médano and La Empacadora beaches, with many also opting for dinner packages at restaurants to witness the stunning spectacle and welcome the new year amidst a backdrop of both joyous and poignant memories.
