Well, the short answer is YES. But the question for most women is more often SHOULD I do hormone replacement therapy because won’t HRT increase my risk of breast cancer and heart attacks? The short answer is NO!. Why do so many people, and much of the medical establishment, still espouse this belief about heart disease and cancer? I am still seeing bogus warnings on Google from supposedly reputable sources like the Mayo Clinic. How can having youthful hormone levels possibly hurt your health? It's nonsense.
The harmful myth that hormone replacement therapy increases women’s risk of cancer and heart disease came out of a heavily flawed study in the late 1990s called, ironically, the “Women’s Health Initiative”. 161,000 postmenopausal women, a good chunk of whom were way past menopausal, overweight, diabetic and smokers were chosen to participate.
They gave the women pharmaceutical-grade hormones in uniform doses orally, (made from horse urine btw), and concluded that hormone therapy causes breast cancer, thereby robbing an entire generation of women of the myriad health benefits of having balanced hormones. Incidentally, even with the sample of women who had compromised health in many cases, the increase in breast cancer was only 5 out of 1000 women vs 4 out of 1000. That may have been a 25% increase like they said but I would still take those odds.
What are some of the benefits?
- The ability to keep harmful fat off their bodies, (especially around the midsection).
- Wrinkle-free skin.
- The ability to build muscle
- Strong bones.
- Restful sleep.
- Energy.
- A positive outlook and mood.
- Keeping a full head of hair.
- A strong immune system to fight the diseases of aging.
In other words, if your hormones have gone south, you can look forward to falling apart quickly, even if you are going to the gym, eating healthy foods and taking your semaglutide. You must be hormonally healthy if you want your Ozempic or other GLP1 to work for you. This applies to men as well as women.
Men’s hormones are quite easy to correct compared to women’s hormones. The comparison reminds me of a funny image I saw on social media about the difference between men and women: The “man” was a machine with a big, green, round “on/off” button in the center and the “woman” was an aircraft’s flight control panel with dozens of different switches, various gauges, altitude meters, different colored lights, wind direction sensors, dials etc. Funny, but true, we ladies are much more complicated, (and not just when it comes to hormones!). Men can correct most of their hormonal problems with the right free testosterone levels, but women need to adjust testosterone, FSH, LH, progesterone, estradiol, DHEA and sometimes thyroid hormones too.
So, who needs hormone replacement therapy? Probably everyone over 45 years old. Men and women both. If you ask the scientists and doctors who really study this subject, they will tell you that people have hormone imbalance and deficiency as young as their 30’s now, due to pollutants in the air and soil, microplastics, poisonous and processed foods, chronic stress, obesity and exposure to endocrine disruptors in myriad forms such as cleaning products, diesel fumes, pesticides and heavy metals.
Why should you do your hormone therapy here in Los Cabos? Well, for one thing our doctors here are the best at it. My anti-aging doctor is flown to other countries to teach their doctors how to do it right. Mexican doctors have been doing it longer and better than doctors in other countries.
Another huge reason to do it in Los Cabos is price. My personalized hormone therapy, (I use twice yearly pellet therapy), costs me less than $100 per month. The exact same therapy in the US is between $400-$500 per month. When I say the “exact same", that is probably incorrect as my doctor can teach the US doctors how to do it properly. I am getting top-quality care for 25% of the price.
So how do you know if you need hormone replacement therapy? Here are some of the possible signs:
- You are waking up at 2 or 3 am and not able to go back to sleep.
- You are depressed or anxious for no reason.
- Your hair is falling out suddenly.
- Your skin is sagging.
- You can no longer keep weight off, even if you are exercising and eating well.
- You are craving alcohol or bad food.
- You have no libido or sex is painful.
- You are fatigued or your energy is flagging.
- You are experiencing mood swings.
- Headaches
- Brain fog
- Muscle aches, tenderness, and stiffness
- Joint pain, stiffness, or swelling
- Increased or decreased heart rate
- Constipation
