On Friday, October 5, 2024, the skies were clear, the seas were calm, and the wind blew from 10 to 12 kts. With the water temperature at 84 degrees and the air between 78 and 87 degrees Fahrenheit, it was a beautiful day to be on the water.
Three anglers from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, David Silvernagle, Hayden Anderson, and Robert Nicholls, decided to charter the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite run by Captain Jesús Romero and Mate Mario Juárez. They headed to the Pozo Cota, where they caught one large (82-pound) Yellowfin on bait.
Captain Manuel, Sr. at the Helm and Mate Jr. running the cockpit of the “LA CORONITA,” a 40-foot Cabo Express, helped to pull off an excellent fishing day for their angler, Rene Corona, from California, when he caught and released one 100-pound Striped Marlin on bait at the Los Arcos, one 30-pound Dorado on bait at the Pedregalito, and two Yellowfin Tuna (one at 50 pounds and one at 110 pounds) on lures below the San Jaime Bank. Happy doesn’t describe Rene Corona as he left the boat. Congratulations, Rene from California!

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
We have started our busy season, and fishing has been cooperating so far. We are excited to see what the next couple of months hold as we have big crowds and big tournaments coming to town. We can see a big change in weather, cooler mornings and early sunsets. Most of the boats continue to head towards Cabo as they look for more action with the small yellowfin tuna. It seems that this tuna school has spread out more as we are starting to see some at Palmilla Point and Cerro Colorado. This week, we did notice that the tuna bite was a lot more productive in the mornings as the bite died down at around 9:00 am on most days. Most of these yellowfin are small, averaging around 4-5 pounds. Within the same area, there is a chance of landing a couple dorado with live sardines. Many of the boats also landed some white skipjacks and big Pacific Bonito (both great to eat). The bait guys continue to net plenty of sardines along the shorelines of Palmilla. This weekend, the tuna bite was a bit slower than usual, which forced many of the boats to look for wahoo or some bottom action.
The fleet started trolling X-Raps, Nomad DTXs and marlin lures starting from Cabeza de Ballena heading towards Palmilla. Many of the wahoo bites came closer to shore, around 2-3 miles. Most of these wahoo are nice sized, averaging around 25-30 pounds. On Friday, Captain Chame was able to land 4 nice wahoo after catching their tuna limit. Some bigger wahoo were also caught on marlin lures, 8-10 miles offshore from Palmilla, Cerro Colorado, and Chileno while looking for blue and striped marlin. A few of the boats reported seeing some followers as they were gaffing their fish.
A few boats within the fleet started to focus more on bottom action and they were successful. They focused primarily on rock structures around Palmilla Point and Cerro Colorado. This weekend, we saw some quality size amberjack, the biggest one weighing 60 pounds. Most of these bites came on live caballito, with only a few strikes on the jigs. We continue to see dogtooth snapper at the inner Gordo on most days. These snappers can be tricky as the current can be tough on most days. For these fish, we are using big strips of skipjacks.
We will start scouting San Luis, Vinorama, and Iman Banks next week for Wahoo and hopefully bigger yellowfin tuna. We have some reports of Los Barriles boats catching nice wahoo at San Luis and Vinorama…Good Fishing, Brian
East Cape
Decent marlin fishing and lots of small roosters and some dorado. The dorado bite has slowed down but there are still some but not like a couple weeks ago. We raised two stripes two sails and a small blue today.
That’s about it. I have been out here the last four days. Out here now. Got some nice skip jacks this morning. The other boats are catching a few bill fish (average a couple a day) and the occasional dorado. There are still a few dorado. We had two come into our chum for the skip jacks this morning and now we are trolling to see if we can’t find a couple more. Then on the inside we will fish the small roosters as they are plentiful in the area of the marina.
So billfish and looking I did hear of a couple wahoo as well for dorado is what most of the fleet is doing. There are some tuna outside I hear about thirty miles.
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay
WATER: Mostly nice and blue the way we like it with surface temps still in the low to mid-80’s. However, judging from some of the species we are hooking some cooler water starting to move in down deeper and along some of the coastal areas.
WEATHER: Warm and sunny. Highs in the mid 90’s in the day time. Can be a tad breezy in the mornings, but overall, nothing to complain about. Evenings are comfortable. I would still keep a light windbreaker handy.
FISH HOOKED THIS WEEK: Dorado, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, sierra, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper, cabrilla, snapper, amberjack, rainbow runner, pompano, trevally, roosterfish
FISHING SCALE 1-10: Solid 7…Jonathan Roldan, Tailhunter Sportfishing.
