La Paz’s traditional Christmas market opened Saturday, November 29, and will run daily through December 24, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Elisa Ruiz, president of the Madero Centro Merchants Union, said this year’s edition is especially meaningful as it celebrates 36 years of bringing the community together. The market features 110 stalls offering seasonal products, clothing, accessories, food, and local crafts.
To improve the visitor experience, organizers adjusted the layout to ease foot traffic and comply with Civil Protection and Mobility Department regulations. Ruiz said the changes aim to ensure the safety and comfort of both merchants and shoppers as the city continues to grow.
Kiosks that were previously located on Independencia Street have been moved to Velasco Garden, just a block from the Cathedral. In preparation for opening day, the Merchants’ Union upgraded lighting and repaired stalls. The space will also host cultural events expected to draw strong community participation.
Ruiz acknowledged that some small businesses have faced challenges in recent years, leading to a drop in participation. Priority for stall spaces will go to downtown merchants, with additional openings made available afterward.
An open-air stage will showcase artistic performances, particularly from young local talent. Those interested in performing can register directly with the organizing committee at the market.
Participating businesses will offer services such as layaway plans and credit card payments. The event will be supervised by PROFECO (Federal Consumer Protection Agency) and Civil Protection to ensure fair trade and compliance with safety regulations.
Ruiz emphasized that organizers are committed to maintaining a safe and reliable shopping environment.
Shoppers are encouraged to join in the festivities and celebrate the season in downtown La Paz.
