Restaurants That Don’t Break The Bank

We love to find local restaurants that have a good variety of items on their menus.  While lots of visitors come to try Mexican food, everyone wants some of their other favorites too, burgers, pizza, sushi, pasta, and more.  Here are some great restaurants with good menus at reasonable prices.

San Jose del Cabo:  Cynthia’s Fresh Restaurant and Organic Market

Located at the front of Plaza Caracol in the hotel zone behind La Comer is Cynthia Fresh Restaurant and Organic Market. Open Monday to Saturday for breakfast and lunch, Cynthia offers a great selection of organic dishes on their menu. Every day there is a fresh soup of the day. There is a great selection of salads, Mexican dishes, tacos, burritos and sandwiches. It is one of Beth’s favorite places for lunch. The challenge is often to find parking, sometimes we need to park at La Comer and walk over.

I ordered a bowl of mushroom soup to start and broke the fresh bread into it. I chose the Baja-style fish tacos for my main course. Beth selected the “My Favorite Salad.” For her lunch. The soups are always great. The fish tacos surprised me as there were two large pieces of battered fish on each of the three tacos on flour tortillas. The dish also came with small cups of rice and beans and some salsa. Beth’s salad was very large and had lettuce, avocados, fruit, a variety of nuts and a strawberry vinaigrette dressing along with a piece of fresh bread.

The food is always good, the service friendly and the restaurant comfortable, whether you choose to sit inside or at the tables outside.  There are also display cases by the check-out area offering organic foods for you to take home.  So, if you like organic choices, this is a great place to stop.

Cabo San Lucas:  Higos y Olivos

HIGOS & OLIVOS CABO SAN LUCAS. Located on the frontage road just outside of Cabo San Lucas and just before Artesanos is Higos & Olivos Restaurant (Figs and Olives).  This restaurant is right on the edge of an arroyo and has been deluged with water and mud during bad hurricane seasons. With a new owner and a renovation to the 30-year-old building, Higos and Olivos opened four years ago only to have to shut down for six months because of COVID-19. With both indoor and outdoor dining, it is a nice place for breakfast, lunch or dinner (open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day but Monday).

Beth and I stopped there after a visit to Costco.  We selected a nice table outside on the patio, covered by an umbrella. The menu had good lunch choices with appetizers (ceviche, guacamole, aguachile shrimp, sashimi), soups, salads, tacos, pasta, enchiladas and sandwiches, fajitas and catch of the day. We ordered the guacamole to start, and Beth wanted to try some of the creamy corn soup. She also ordered the tempura-styled shrimp tacos on flour tortillas and I ordered the Spring Spaghetti with vegetables. The guacamole came with Pico de Gallo and tortilla chips and was a great way to start our lunch. The corn soup lived up to its name and was very creamy and came with garlic bread. Beth was shocked that there were three large tacos with lots of breaded shrimp with each, served with guacamole, Pico de Gallo and refried beans.  She ended up taking lots home for lunch the next day. The vegetables in my Spring spaghetti included carrots, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. The meal was accompanied by two pieces of garlic bread. It was a big bowl and so I ended up taking half of it home too. The food was great and very reasonable – especially given the portion sizes.  The service was excellent.

Pescadero: Besos de Mezcal

Located at Luz de Luna down the dirt road by Baja Beans in Pescadero is an interesting restaurant, Besos de Mezcal. With outdoor seating beside the pool and under pergolas in two different areas, Besos de Mezcal provides a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy an evening of food and entertainment. The bar and kitchen are at the beginning of the restaurant, and they have recently added a wood-fired pizza oven and outdoor kitchen area to prepare their pizzas. The menu includes a wide range of sushi and sashimi choices, salads, burgers, wings and pizza.

I decided to try two of their sushi alternatives on the menu. The first is a sashimi dish with fresh tuna served with two different dipping sauces, wasabi, ginger, cucumbers, shredded cabbage, pickled onions and jalapenos. The fish was very fresh and the sauces were excellent. The second choice was a special roll with fish on the inside and outside along with a variety of sauces. It was delicious.

One of the other reasons to visit Besos de Mezcal is that they often have live music. For my visit on a Thursday, Terra Nova was playing, featuring David Raitt, Richard Hastings and Tony Askins. These extremely skilled musicians not only harmonize beautifully but the combination of Tony on fiddle, Richard on guitar and David on everything (percussion, bass, guitar, flute, harmonica) make the performance memorable.

The atmosphere at Besos de Mezcal is very pleasant, the service is great, and the food quality and portion size are very good.  It is an especially good place to enjoy a meal on one of the nights that they feature live music.
