This morning, Ritchie Quocksister from Victoria, BC, Canada, shared an incredible video of a rare and highly venomous yellow sea snake (Hydrophis platurus) spotted between La Jolla and Mama Mia’s in San José del Cabo. While taking a morning stroll, Ritchie noticed the striking black-and-yellow creature slithering near the shore and managed to capture it on video—what a find!
The yellow sea snake is known for its powerful neurotoxin, making it more dangerous than any land snake in Mexico. While they typically drift in open waters, sightings near beaches like this remind us to stay aware. Though these snakes are not aggressive, they can deliver a serious bite if threatened, so it’s best to admire them from a safe distance.
Check out Ritchie’s video below to see this fascinating marine reptile in action. It’s a rare treat, but also a reminder to tread carefully in the beautiful waters of Los Cabos. Thanks, Ritchie, for sharing this amazing encounter!
